1st Grade!

Baby girl is technically in the first grade this school year and I am pretty much done selecting what she will be using.

Prior to this, we were mainly relaxed homeschoolers. Learning by living life, reading, listening, and watching whatever interested us. I wanted their early years to be less formal, but I can see that both kids are ready for some formal education and so we are switching gears a bit.

One major new thing we are doing for homeschool this year is Classical Conversations. I am very excited and interested to see how this will be for us.

Here is her first grade curriculum.

Language Arts

022436: Phonics Pathways: Clear Steps to Easy Reading and Perfect Spelling, 10th Edition
878021: Explode the Code, Book 1 (2nd Edition; Homeschool Edition)
339443: First Language Lessons for the Well-Trained Mind, Level 1
498104: Handwriting Without Tears Grade 1 Kit

Classical Conversations

For history, geography, science I really relied on our Classical Conversations Foundations curriculum. We are currently in cycle one.

For history & geography we covered ancient empires, people, and countries.

For science we are covering biology and earth science. She has once a week hands-on science at our CC community.

She is also learning and memorizing latin noun declensions, the multiplication tables, conversions, geometric formulas, algebraic laws, English verbs and prepositions.

She is also singing and memorizing the whole Timeline from creation to the modern world.

Fine Arts

Fine arts is also covered in Classical Conversations. This year she will be drawing and learning about different great artists like Giotto and Michelangelo for art.

For music, she will be introduced to the tin whistle, learning about rhythm, note names, and different composers. I also signed her up for a subscription of online Prodigies Music Lessons.

Health/Physical Education

I don’t have a specific “curriculum” for this other than good ‘ol common sense.

Go outside and play, run, bike, enjoy the fresh air and sunshine and even the cold wind.

We talk about good food choices and learn how to read nutrition labels and ingredient lists when we go to the grocery store or around the kitchen.

Wrapping It Up

And….that’s all for now. I have a few other curriculum in the closet like Mystery of History, Critical Thinking, but for now I think this is good.

Do you have a 1st grader this year? If so, please share some of the curriculum you are using and loving in the comment section below! I’d love to hear from you.
