I know spring is just around the corner but this post has been sitting in draft for months and for some unknown reasons (or my careless mistake) I lost the entire post. Not to be defeated by technology, I pressed on. Two months later…I am publishing this post by God’s grace! 😅 Anyway, our winter schedule will most likely be about the same for spring.
One thing that helps our homeschool day flow well is by having a schedule or routine. My kids are 6 & 9 right now and for the most part this schedule has worked well for us.
Our 2022 winter homeschool schedule is not much different than our fall schedule. The only “big” change is we switched Micah’s piano lesson from Friday to Tuesday.
I like to wake up before the kids so I can have some quiet time with God, chit chat and pray with my husband, and work on the computer for a bit.
I typically set my alarm clock to 5 a.m., however, I usually don’t roll out of bed until half hour or so later. 😅
There are days that my body is just telling me I need more rest so on those days, I just wake up when the kids wake me up, which is usually 7 a.m.
As you can see, my early morning time is not set in stone, but I do prefer to wake up early so I can get a bit of time to myself before all the chaos.
Breakfast & Morning Circle
Around 7 a.m., I start making breakfast since that’s usually the time the kids wake up. Sometimes, my husband will make breakfast and lunch depending on how busy of a morning it is. This really helps me out a lot, but I don’t expect it since he is usually out the door for work around 7:30 a.m.
While the kids are eating breakfast, we have our morning circle. This is when we read a kids devotional book together, pray, and go over the game plan of the day. This is also a time where I can go over/talk about any habit forming or character building that I see fit for the time as their mom. For example, reminding the kids to say thank you to their tutors after each lesson.
Exercise & Music
After the kids’ breakfast & morning circle, they will play or practice their instruments. Micah practices the piano, Ellie plays the bells and follows the prodigies music lessons. During this time, I do my 15-minute exercise, which is a video exercise program called Yoga Burn.
After exercising, I eat my breakfast, prep for lunch, and clean up the kitchen/dining table.
Get Ready & AM Routine
After cleaning the kitchen, we all head upstairs to get ready for the day. Shower, brush teeth, brush hair, change clothes. Then, we do our AM routines.
The kids’ AM routine is:
- Pick up dirty clothes
- Start 1 load of laundry
- Make their beds
My AM routine is:
- Clean up kitchen (if I didn’t get a chance to do it earlier)
- Make bed
- Clean up & wipe down bathroom counter
For morning homeschool, I focus on subjects that the kids need more 1:1 time on, which is math and language arts. This will typically take up 2 hours since I am going back and forth between the two kids plus bathroom breaks and snack time. If you are curious about which curriculum we use, you can go here.
Lunch usually takes about an hour, give or take. Sometimes I have to prep and make lunch, sometimes it’s already done from morning. It really depends on how efficient I am that day.
During the cold months we just go out for a quick walk. If the weather is nicer, we will stay out longer. Snow days are especially fun to play in the snow or go sledding.
We continue with the rest of homeschool after we all get our wiggles out.
We will review their CC memory work, timeline, and work on their weekly presentations. We also do our grammar lesson and do some reading together.
Typically, we do a quick clean up from homeschool and finish laundry.
I do my weekly cleaning of the living room, kitchen, bedrooms, bathrooms on a rotation. Then, we enjoy some free time, aka screen time. 😅
Dinner, Evening Routine, Bedtime
I prep dinner around 5pm and we eat around 6pm. Then, it’s clean up and get ready for bed!
And…that’s more or less what we do on a typically homeschool day.
How about you? Do you have a routine your follow? Do you homeschool in the morning or afternoon, or both? Or in the evening? Let me know in the comment section below. I’d love to hear from you!
